The Prater's Creek Gazette 8th Issue Winter 2005 Page #8 |
As Compiled by Sports Editor Bubba McCalister and his brother Dorris Chasing The Rabbit Sometimes,
there ain’t nothin’ better to me and my brother Dorris than following our
pack of beagles as they are hot on the trail of a rabbit. Like Bill Monroe
often said, them beagles start sounding like they are singing when they are
barking and chasing after a little cottontail. A hunter develops a special
relationship with his dogs. Each hound has it’s own personality. You get to
know each one of ‘em as an individual. Monroe said he could pick out each
dog’s individual bark as they ran through the woods. Them dogs is more than
just our hounds, they are our buddies. Why, just the other day, Dorris was
saying that’s it’s like he’s got ten other brothers besides me.
They
ain’t much better on earth than to hear them hounds running a rabbit out of
the brush so that me and Dorris and can shoot that little critter. Some of
my fondest memories of my grandpa are the times he took me and Dorris rabbit
hunting. We started going when we were nine years old. He and dad also
learned us how to train the beagles.
And the rabbit is a respectable quarry too. They is smart. By the end of rabbit season they get smarter, learning tricks to elude the dogs. They’ll back track a piece in a U-turn, then, they’ll jump off the trail and just laugh as the hounds go barreling by, all confused. Mmmmm! Rabbit is good eatin’ too! They is my favorite wild game. Below is my grandma’s recipe for fried rabbit. You’ll need a couple of rabbits, one cup of flour, and two cups of cooking oil. Cut them rabbits into pieces and boil ‘em in salty water for an hour. Then drain them on paper towels. Roll ‘em in the flour and fry ‘em up in a good cast iron skillet. By that time your biscuits ought to be ready, and it’s suppertime!! Great News for Area Trout Fishers
So the State Department of Transportation is gonna funnel the cool water in a pipe before it hits the warm lake and send it under the lake to the creek below. This will not only raise the trout population but will also help bring back other species of fish and plant life as well. |
